What is 'handcrafted' or 'artisan'?

Artisanal products are generally described as distinctive food or drink products made in small quantities, in a traditional or non-mechanized way using high-quality ingredients.  Since they are crafted by a person with a skilled trade, especially one that involves making things by hand, they may also be termed as ‘handcrafted.’ Most artisanal products are produced through methods and recipes handed down through the generations, and tastes and processes such as fermentation, are allowed to develop slowly and naturally, rather than accelerated for mass-production.
